R.E.D.Friday, short for “Remember Everyone Deployed”, is a grassroots tradition celebrated by the wider U.S. military community and supporters. It encourages people to wear a red article of clothing (including shirts, ties, shoes, or accessories) every Friday to show solidarity with active-duty service members deployed overseas.
The origin of the tradition is obscure, with some attributing it to a local tradition in small town USA commemorating the bravery of their local troops spreading out until becoming a nationwide trend. Others claim it came from the Great White North of Canada, with military spouses encouraging their fellow citizens and family to wear red in solidarity with their deployed loved ones.
However it started, the meaning remains the same: the red colors represent the sacrifice, valor, courage, and bravery shown by the enlisted during their tours overseas. It also honors the blood spilled in defense of freedom and our country’s interests abroad. The tradition is explicitly non-political, focusing on supporting our warriors rather than any one military conflict.
Participation in R.E.D. Friday provides comfort and reassurance to those military families who have loved ones serving abroad that the difficulties and sacrifices they have made do not go unrecognized. It also helps those service members know that there are people who support and appreciate their role in defending our country.
